What do a normal Christmas tree, a washing machine and a clothes dryer have in common? Easy, they all use hydrogen. Presented at H2planet by Hydro2power's stand (Pavilion 18 – I13) – the first Italian company completely focused on hydrogen technologies – during Hydrogen Show 2009 – they are examples of immediate applicability of fuel cell technology for everyday use.
The Christmas tree, or better still, the lights, are powered by GreenHub, the hydrogen fuel-cell generator developed by H2planet. Thanks to its zero emissions, it is ideal to generate power totally independently from the electricity grid. The washing machine and clothes dryer are the result of collaboration between Electrolux and H2planet by Hydro2power.
The LB2009 washing machine is powered by a hydrogen generator and a fuel cell. The machine draws warm water generated inside a chemical reactor thanks to the reaction of a magnesium-based alloy which splits it into oxygen and hydrogen. The chemical reaction produces heat, which, heats the water by means of an exchanger, while producing hydrogen, and which, in turn, powers the fuel cells by means of a storage cylinder. This latter supplies the energy needed to function the motor and electronic controls of the appliance.
AS2009 is, on the other hand, a clothes dryer that produces energy from a fuel cell and a methane-powered low environmental impact electric generator. The heat generated by the conversion process is not wasted and is reused in the drying process, while the electricity produced by the fuel cell powers the electric charges and heats the resistances of the dryer.
